Paper, Paper EVERYWHERE! was the first of this season's Little Tots sessions at Norwich Puppet Theatre. We had all sorts of paper related fun... paper rain, paper bunting, paper beds and a paper moon....
Next up Planet UV on the 21st Nov Dress-up Mayhem on the 19th Dec A day in a cardboard cave.
It was dark and quite cool (the school's heating was on the blink!) which added to the atmosphere. There was a "fire" - or LED lights, tissue paper and twigs - to add to the feel and give us a little bit of light to do our drawing by. The children were all really excited to be given walls and floors to draw on. There was lots of energy in the room and the first couple of groups seemed to need to make marks on as many bits of wall as they could before settling down to some more focussed drawing. The installation has been left up at the school for a few days, so parents, staff and other children can come and take a peek at the cardboard cave. We were thinking of family sayings and positive messages like "Chin up" and " Be yourself". This one is "You'll never walk alone" We also had " Go-Go Power Rangers!" We masking taped them together and strung them up in the school to send our positive messages out into the world. We are going to develop these and pick some to make into fabric flags that will hopefully last a bit longer!
This is what Charlotte K Arculus, of Magic Adventure fame, wrote about my Towers workshop, which she took part in last year. Charlotte has had a massive influence on my work and continues to do so ! " Fox’s Boxes (my term) was a workshop session run by Sophie Fox. It is a piece she has developed for running with family groups. In short, as a group, we built a very large tower together but this risks ignoring the process over the outcome (even though the tower was really, really beautiful). Sophie took us through several exercises and games in order to prepare us for the big task. The group I was in was very large - about 15 people – and what was particularly outstanding is the sense of complicité I felt towards my fellow group members by the end of the session – something I would have previously thought could only be accomplished through group music making and drama exercises – but of course is was musical – it was visual art music! The tower worked on macro and micro levels with some people working on the large structure and overview while others created tiny environments with small toys and others worked on decoration and mark making. This of course is how it would work with parents and very small children together. The tower build was improvised and undirected – which pays testament to Ms Fox’s skills as a facilitator, able to trust in the process she has set up. There will be photos on Earlyarts website – they won’t do justice to the three dimensional space we created together."
